One of the things I did was to take a card each day and study it. I would look at it, repeat the meanings and then put it under my pillow. Just before drifting off to sleep, I would ask spirit to help me understand the essence of the card. A bit time consuming but it will pay off.

The best thing to do with the people who go out of their way to insult your beliefs is to ignore them. They are exactly the ones who will tell you how much they love God while they are spewing out their angry, nasty words. They are the ones with the problem.

I used to find learning the meanings of the cards really difficult, but then a friend recommended a specially designed crib sheet with all of the meanings written on one sheet. I actually found one of these tarot sheets at:

www.paranormality.com It is listed under: Tarot Card Meanings Sheet. I found it helped I take it with me when I go to tarot readers so I can check straight afterwards if what they told me was true.

The best way I found to memerize them is to just do readings! Start out with mini readings online or with friends. Get index cards and put meanings on them. As you do readings, pull the index card for that card and then one day you will know it without needing to pull it.

Why don't you just get the ones with the meanings already printed on them?

*sigh* I'm becoming tired just reading the other responses to this.

Honestly, my first instinct is to tell you not to. I "learned" Tarot from a man who refused to let me "cheat" by looking at the book of what the cards were supposed to mean. To this day, I truly believe that your best guide is how the cards speak to you, personally. Find a deck that you relate to - for me, it's the traditional Rider-Waite, but other people find meaning in other decks. When you can look at the card and see the various levels of meaning just via the illustration, you no longer need to memorize anything. (It makes it harder to be glib - if you want to learn Tarot to be a professional fortune-teller on a streetcorner, this is not the route for you. But if you actually want to use it for divination and insight, simply interpreting the cards afresh each time is the best way to go about it.)

That doesn't mean you don't have to study. For my money, the best book I've found is "Learning the Tarot" by Joan Bunning. It goes through several spreads and examines each card individually. I don't always agree with the interpretations given, but it points out aspects of the cards I might not have noticed otherwise, and when I'm stuck on an interpretation it can often break through with a new insight.

An exercise you might want to try: take your favorite deck and go through it, card by card. With each card, study it for several minutes and try to interpret it in every possible way. Go over every nuance of the illustration; examine the symbolism of the title or of the suit and number. If your brain comes up with something wacky and unconventional, follow it up. A lot of it will be contradictory; that's ok. The idea is that, next time you do a reading, all those various explanations will be in your mind, and whichever one is most appropriate for the situation will be closer at hand.

Study the Major Arcana first and practice doing Tarot spreads using only those cards. Learn the general symbolism behind the scenes depicted in each card. After awhile you can delve more into what the other suits mean in the Minor Arcana. For example, learn what general information you will get if you draw several wands or cups. A basic understanding of numerology is also helpful.

Memorize is not really what you want to do. You want to come to understand the symbolism and how it relates to human experience. When I was teaching Tarot, here's what I did.

First, put the deck in order, major arcana first, from 0 to 22. Then put the four suits in order, from ace to king. The order of the suits is wands, cups, swords, pentacles. (The reasons why for this is complicated.)

Now look at what each card says. There are several good references for this. A really excellent guide for learning the Tarot is "the Qabalistic Tarot" by Robert Wang. Don't be put off by the title; there is really no such thing as Tarot which is not based on the Qabalah.

Studying the symbols and what they represent takes time, but you will find there's nothing about memorizing in it. Once you understand, you remember.

Burn them first then just remember the ashes.

Also, stop screaming at people to respect your inane beliefs. It won't work. Silly, fad based "beliefs" deserve to be challenged, not respected. And actually, in reality by pointing out how stupid it is to think that turning some cards can predict the future, we are doing you a great service in attempting to educate you out of the middle ages and into the 21st century.

If you do need to predict your future, I can help you. My prediction is that if you throw away the tarot cards, you will still be just as bale to predict your future as you could with them.

The future is an unknown land. Enjoy your journey into it, don't try to read the map, it's all a surprise waiting to happen.

I can summon a demon to help you if you would like LOL...

Tarot is a very complicated art, and there is no short cut for a good reader, you have to practice, and read about it, and practice and read more, and when you think you will not learn anything else about it, a whole ton of new insight to the cards will show up, you do not memorize Tarot like a phone number, it has to become a way of thinking about things

Master Tarot Reader!
